How much should you save each month on your salary?
Use a flexible approach, including when income is tight.

The 50/30/20 rule is a starting point
Allocate net income to needs (50%), personal spending (30%) and saving or debt repayment (20%). These are not compulsory percentages. Adapt them if housing alone takes more than half your income.
Example with €1,500 net income
A theoretical split is €750 for needs, €450 for leisure and variable spending, and €300 for savings. If €300 is unrealistic, a consistent €30 or €50 is more useful than giving up.
Build a buffer before taking risks
Prioritise an accessible reserve. Three to six months of essential expenses is a common reference, but the amount depends on employment and family stability.
Automate and review
Schedule a transfer when paid, review recurring expenses and adjust every three months. Consider high-interest debt before investing.
Give the goal a date
To build €1,200 over twelve months, save €100 monthly, excluding interest. Use the calculator to adjust the target.
