One dinner, three friends: who actually owes whom?

Split a trip fairly when someone skips an activity. Work out each person’s share before making transfers.

Start with the people who took part

Ana pays €90 for a room shared by three. Ben pays €36 for dinner with Ana. Carla skips dinner. Charge €30 each for the room and €18 each to the two diners.

Compare spending with each share

Ana owes €48 and paid €90: she should receive €42. Ben owes €48 and paid €36: he owes €12. Carla owes €30 and paid nothing. Ben sends Ana €12 and Carla sends Ana €30.

Check your totals

The shares add up to €126, the same as the two receipts. If the numbers disagree, look for a missing participant, a deposit counted twice or a refund. Assign any rounding cent once and record who took it.
